I am a first year 2nd grade teacher. I am building my classroom library from scratch and it is my mission to build a truly inclusive library for all of my students to enjoy for years to come.
I teach in a very diverse classroom with students coming from many different cultural backgrounds and it is equally important that each and everyone of my students are represented. I want them all to be able to find books that showcase their own identities and experiences reflected in literature.
On the other hand, I feel that a diverse library is important to have no matter the demographic because it allows the students to learn a different story. It teaches empathy and allows students to see what it is like to those who don't share the same background.
