Every year, my 3rd grade students have a musical performance. We always learn to play 1-2 instruments during this time, which has always been xylophone and recorders. My students ask me every year if they can learn guitar, and I would like something new and fresh to teach them.
Ukuleles would make my students so excited and challenge them to read music in a whole new way! We focus on reading music all year long, and xylophones focus on the traditional way of reading music with one note at a time, while Ukuleles will teach them to read lead sheets which have the fingers and frets they are supposed to play. Music appeals to many parts of the brain and would challenge them to read music in multiple ways.
Guitars are very expensive and not something we can afford. However, Ukuleles are smaller and a great starting place for students who are just starting to play music. Thank you for considering my students and I for this special project to donate to!
