Many students do not have access to "real" art supplies, and especially not the lesser fortunate students! Much like my own childhood, many of these students do not have encouragement from home to be creative. Students who build on their creativity in the arts actually can increase their success in other areas. In a Title 1 district with 80% free lunch, students just might be invested to stay in school if their creative needs can be nourished.
By connecting art history with student creativity, we can build the confidence of students who struggle in the core subjects. Building courage and confidence in low-income students via the visual arts is my goal.
Utilizing basic supplies such as watercolor paints, actual watercolor paper (as opposed to printer paper that wrinkles up!), chalk pastels and oil pastels, the students can practice their art with inspiration from great artists, past and present! We have "Famous Fridays" when we take the time to learn about the style and work of a different artist each week. The students will discover their personal favorites, and find their own style. Even students who "think they can't"....can. And that is what the goal is, to show them through practice, "the power of YET".
