My students sometimes struggle when big emotions arise and they are not able to meet classroom expectations. My students benefit from having safe places in the school setting where they can reset and learn how their brains work and how to be mindful. I am using as much as I can from Mindup by Goldie Hawn to help my students have tools to help them regulate when big emotions hijack their brains. Everyone needs to be able to identify what is happening when they are overcome by emotions. Mind Up is a fantastic program that teaches kiddos about their brain and how to be mindful. My students learn mindfulness from books. This program has lots of books to enrich the learning of mindful practices. I have found this is the easiest way to get students to engage with topics that for some can be difficult. I also have found that kiddos that have a way to fidget while they are doing hard things tend to focus better. We have found these wobble cushions help all kiddos to focus and give their full attention to their work.
