Early literacy is a powerful part of literacy success and can lead to a deeper exploration of STEM ideas. Integrating literacy is an important aspect of STEM education. Exploring fictional books through STEM concepts can lead to success in all academic domains. Fiction stories can get students hooked on STEM topics in a different way than nonfiction stories. Students can see themselves in these fictional stories. With these fictional stories, I will be able to explore characters, setting, plot, and the 5 W’s of a story (who, what, when, where, why) within a STEM topic. Literacy can be a common struggle for second language learners. Having more fictional stories tied to STEM lessons can bring a topic to life and can lead to more fluent reading and writing skills.
