One of the issues with English is that we never seem to read contemporary fiction, and we barely read anything that was written for teenagers. While it is good for students to stretch their learning. I want to give them a chance to engage with a novel that was written for them, and the issues discussed are ones they are facing to this day (in this instance civil rights and wrongful incarceration).
"Dear Martin" will give us a chance to explore these topics while providing students with a story in which they can recognize themselves, their community, and their friends. At the same time it will tie into our Literature of the Civil Rights Unit by providing a modern link to historical figures.
