With the COVID-19 restrictions of the last school year, my students, who already struggle with behaviors, were stuck sitting at desks with flimsy plastic partitions for their safety. This led to an increase in behaviors and feelings of claustrophobia, anxiety, and sensory overload. This year, we are allowed to bring back comfortable spaces in our classrooms, and I want to be able to give my students a special corner for reading, learning, and calming down. The comfortable futon and soft rug will help support my kids with regulating their bodies and emotions, and they will provide a welcoming space for reluctant learners to interact with books and other materials. This flexible seating space will be open for my students if they want to bring their work to it, calm down from a behavior or stressful situation, or simply play a board game with their peers to work on their socialization skills. Having this calm, comforting space will help meet my students' basic needs, allowing them to grow and learn on higher levels academically and social emotionally.
