Studies have shown that flexible seating in the classroom boosts student engagement while creating a student-centered environment. As a new teacher, it is important for me to create an environment where students are active participants in their learning. I want them to have to independence to make choices that they feel will help them learn better in the classroom.
The focus of the class should be on creating a learning environment in which all students have an equal opportunity to learn. This looks different for every student! In order to differentiate instruction in the classroom, I'd like to provide my students with the autonomy to choose how they learn best. In order to accomplish this, I want to provide my students with different options for flexible seating, some of which include balance ball seats, comfortable floor seats, and giant comfortable pillows.
Allowing students to work in a flexible seating classroom also teaches students how to engage in the real world. It empowers them to choose what works best for them, while also teaching them how to communicate and collaborate with their classmates. And most importantly, it keeps the classroom and learning environment fun!
