Did you love reading comic books as a kid? Many reluctant readers are inspired to read longer works when they start off with graphic novels. Graphic novels contain rich vocabulary and meaning.
Your donation will allow my ninth and tenth graders to choose from a variety of books and form literature circles. In these mini book clubs, students will not only read and discuss classic stories from Poe and Bradbury, but discover new works that speak to a diverse range of experiences, such as Mariko Tamaki, Octavia Butler and John Lewis.
As a culminating project, students will create book reports for the graphic novel of their choice. Forget the boring book reports you were made to do! In our classroom, we will make Tik Tok book pitches, reenact important scenes, and create movie posters as our reviews. The students' ultimate goal will be to convince their classmates to read their graphic novel next. By utilizing technology and social media, I hope to make my students into life long readers.
