This summer, I had the opportunity to take the First Steps in Music certification course through Vandercook College of Music, taught by its founder, Dr. John Feierabend. First Steps in Music is a pedagogy that focuses on American folk music, audiation (the ability to hear melodies in your head), tuneful singing, beat-full movements, and artistic children.
I have purchased some of the First Steps in Music materials, but am looking to add to my collection, particularly in the American folk music and folk dance traditions, and Song Tales portions. Song Tales are picture book stories that are designed to which to be sung.
These American folk songs and folk dances will help to revive a lost tradition of American school children. These folk songs and dances are progressive, so they can be taught to students of all grade levels. I will be using them for my students K-5. Song Tales will help stimulate the imagination and creativity of the young minds, as they first listen to the songs and then later see the illustrations.
