Hands-on experiences will help my students learn new concepts in a concrete manner. The goal is to move to the abstract, however, many of my students need other ways of learning and demonstrating their learning in the beginning. Hands-on activities allow students to experiment with trial and error and learn from their mistakes.
Providing students with manipulatives not only keeps them engaged and leads to increased retention, it also provides them with various ways of demonstrating their learning. It was very difficult to reach our most vulnerable children through distance learning and creating hands-on experiences for them was a challenge. Providing students with manipulatives helps them demonstrate their understanding in a way that can be understood by others without speaking or writing.
