I want to offer my students the ability to learn necessary social, emotional and behavioral skills through meaningful and culturally relevant literature, restorative conversations and effective communication activities.
These materials will be used in a small group setting with seven 6-8 grade boys with Severe Emotional Disabilities. We will read, discuss and journal about each book and engage in daily restorative conversations and activities to help each student develop self-regulation and coping skills.
Myself and my support staff are hoping to teach our students social, emotional, behavioral and executive skills that will allow them to succeed in school and reach their fullest potential. The books will be used for both individual and small group reading discussions, journal and projects. These books where chosen specifically because they are cultural competent and speak to many social situations and emotions that our group of students can relate to and can then use the literature and our small group discussions to build skills in managing emotions, goal setting and maintaining perseverance.
In addition, the Letz Talk Cards will be used as a fun and engaging way to talk with the students and emotions and social situations, and the white boards will be used to support students with their academics!
