The items that I am requesting are much needed after a year and a half spent virtually learning. Due to the pandemic, my district went one-to-one Chromebooks for students. Since then, I have seen an overwhelmingly large amount of screen time for my 6th graders. They spent much of their class time completing work on screens, and then when students were completely finished with their work, they were told to find something to keep them busy on a screen. It hurt my teacher heart to see such little social interaction, as I strive to build relationships with my students, and I value student-to-student interaction. I have chosen these items to provide opportunities for my students to shut their screens and socially interact with their peers and adults in the room. I want to see kids attempting to solve brain teasers. I want to see kids giggling with each other, even if it is from behind masks! I want to see new friendships being formed. I want to play along with my students and truly get to know them in a non-content atmosphere. These items will be used daily. I teach an advisory class every morning where we check grades and complete missing work. My students set goals for themselves and for the class as whole. Many days, my kids are completely caught up on all missing work and their grades are in great standing. It is this time that I want to focus on their social and emotional learning. I want them to play games such as the ones I've asked for all while interacting with each other. You can learn so much from students just by sitting down and chit chatting while playing a game. Many students don't have the opportunity for this type of interaction at home.
