These students are struggling to do 4th grade math because most of them have had sporadic schooling over the last 18 months, whether online, home-schooled, a combination, or neither. The way I describe the situation to them is that my job is to build a 4 story student (at least in terms of math) by the end of the year. But I can't build a solid fourth floor if there are a lot of bricks missing from the second and third floors. I need these items to reinforce or re-teach what they've learned in the past so that we can finish at grade level by the end of they school year.
It's not the kids' fault that they have fallen behind. But unless I can restore the gaps in their education, I fear they will always be behind and will have increasing difficulty as they get older. The skills they lack now are required to do every subsequent skill. They need to be able to build upon prior knowledge and that's where the issue is. They either lost it or never attained it.
