Community-based, hands on learning opportunities are an essential part of education for a child on the Autism spectrum. My students not only work on academic skills at school, but also on communication, vocational, and social skills.
I strive to give my students functional and meaningful ways to work on all of these skills, and starting a coffee cart business will allow them to learn and practice skills they will utilize throughout their entire lives. When running a coffee cart, students will practice vocational skills such as sorting and organizing items, counting money, and following directions to prepare beverages. Students of all communication abilities will practice greetings, making conversation, and asking and answering questions. They will also be able to practice communication and social skills with staff members across the building who they typically do not have a chance to interact with.
Please consider donating to this project to help supply the needed materials for a coffee cart.
