At our core, K奴pa鈥檃 teachers believe that the foundation of learning is built on relationships. For the past year and a half, however, our students have been doing school at home, unable to fully connect with anyone at school. When the time came last year for some of them to return to school, they came in groups of 鈪, every 11th day, required to remain 6 feet apart indoors at all times, all obstacles to building relationships and to be honest, heartbreaking to watch; their desire to make connections with their peers was palpable.
We are so grateful to be able to bring the whole campus back to school August 3rd and are certainly aware of the newest educational buzzwords 鈥渓earning loss鈥--we know we have a gap to help them bridge and that they will be working hard this year to make gains on the pandemic's impact on their learning, but what we also know is that they are kids and they need to have fun with friends and with us, to enjoy school. Many of our students have not been on campus since March of 2020 and will need support building relationships with peers.
K奴pa鈥檃 teachers have planned a year's worth of activities to incorporate fun, relationship building activities that also addresses their social skills and emotional needs while fostering a sense of community within our team. We would like to do a water balloon toss, mask making with our team name, and a decathlon of sorts composed of one fun, physical event a month as a team (4 square, water balloon toss, etc.), and are requesting the items to do so. To address the stresses they may have, we'd like to equip them with tools like calming glitter jars and stress balls. Many of the items we selected will be used yearly.
