As a special educator, my goal is to get my students to a place where they can recognize emotions and use strategies to regulate themselves so that they can continue learning. This has become increasingly difficult in the post-COVID educational world where some students have not had the same amount of social emotional learning as they normally would have over the past couple of years. These skills are essential for all students, but especially for the students that I work with in Special Education so that they can become valuable and contributing members of the community!
This project will help me to support students in their journey to emotional stability, and being able to use strategies to regulate themselves in order to continue their learning and growth. The social emotional books will be used to explicitly teach strategies for students to manage their own emotions in various situations that come up regularly. For example, how to deal with anxiety or stress in a school or social setting. The items such as the bean bag, timers, fidget sets and calming mazes will all be used to meet students individual sensory needs when disregulated. The other items (yoga books and cards) to support students in growing their independence in being able to self regulate without adult support. All of these items are supporting the emotional development of my students this year and in many years to come! Thank you for your support of my project and education as a whole. We appreciate you!
