Every year our 6th grade students learn to become expert voyagers. They embark on a year long study of best practices and ancestral knowledge of traditional voyaging culture. In partnership with Kanehunamoku Voyaging Academy our students take the knowledge they have been taught throughout their years at Malama Honua Public Charter School and apply it in a week long sail. Itʻs exciting to look forward to hands on learning this year following a year of learning virtually.
We want our students to embody a Hawaiian proverb "He waʻa he moku, he moku he waʻa." The canoe is an island, and the island is a canoe. Through their yearlong project they will use the kaula or rope to learn navigational knots and the importance of knowing what each knot is used for. They will learn to use the cots to set up and break down camp before their week long sail. This instills in our students the Mind of the Navigator skill Communication and Collaboration.
