Many of my preschool students will be leaving their home environment for the first time. Ensuring that ALL of my students feel a sense of belonging and friendship in our classroom is the most important goal of the year (especially considering the effects of the pandemic). As our students are diverse in ability, language, race, religion, and background, our classroom is in need of materials that represent our diversity.
The reading, play, and art materials I am seeking for my students will facilitate rich social interactions between students, give them a sense of belonging as they see themselves in our diverse stories, and allow students of any ability to participate in our classroom community. For example, I have chosen stories that show a variety of ages, races, abilities, and gender roles. In addition, I have added multicultural paints and crayons so students can accurately represent themselves through art. Finally, I selected a few toys that students at any level of ability can enjoy.
With your help, we can start the year with a classroom in which all of our students feel safe, welcome, seen, and heard!
