By having calculators for each student, they will not have to share calculators with each other. This will help alleviate the anxiety of calculating the arithmetic and just focus on learning the algebra concepts they are learning.
Algebra tiles is the best! They don't expect to learn math using manipulatives in high school and when we hand them the algebra tiles, they get excited. Their face lights up when they understand the algebra concept while manipulating the algebra tiles. "IT MAKES SENSE" is something we hear from the students!
Allowing students to have their own set of algebra tiles and calculators would help my students feel safer in our classroom.
