When I first started my teaching career, I sub all over my local school district. One day I sub for an 8th grade English class that had two hamsters. My first thought was, that is cool, but why would middle schoolers need a class pet? And then I saw the effects a class pet has. Students had a sense of responsibility. They took care of the animal and held the animal for social-emotional support.
A classroom pet will make a difference in my 4th graders' learning by giving them a sense of responsibility, help them with their social-emotional needs, and apply our life science standards.
