Students receiving special education services on a middle school campus sometimes lack a variety of options to support their learning. Desk risers make it possible to give students an option to stand to do their work. Students with ADHD who get easily distracted will sometimes focus better with less distractions such as the dividers found on my list. Noise cancellation headphones allow students to focus when the classroom gets too noisy. These supports will give my students access to the education provided while addressing some of the barriers to learning that they face due to their disabilities.
Teaching Special Education means acquiring a breadth of resources. My project title, "Fairness Means Everyone Gets What They Need", includes differentiating for every student I teach. Last year half of my 6th-grade students were reading at a K-2nd grade level. I was not prepared to teach phonics yet there I was scrambling for resources to make sure every student had what they needed to close the learning gaps that they faced. Teachers Pay Teachers is a great resource to provide access to the general education curriculum and gives each student a chance to complete activities to help master skills that are creating the learning gaps. I never know what my students need until they need it. Until it becomes clear there are significant learning gaps that the grade-level curriculum will not address. This makes Teachers Pay Teachers a very important resource for me.
