Due to my students socioeconomic background, many do not have access to appropriate books and literature at home. Students will use these books for independent reading and directly compare them to the literature we are discussing as a class. They will use these books to identify literary devices and techniques as well as use them for source material. Additionally, these books include a variety of genres from classics to graphic novels that entice the reader to use higher level critical thinking skills. By giving students agency in their choice of literature it will increase a students sense of self and belonging in my classroom.
