Students in my class come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, including trauma. Some students have difficulty with focusing on their classwork because of strong feelings and emotions. Outbursts and tantrums disrupt the learning environment. My school is one of a handful of schools in the county that has been given the opportunity to receive training and support from Hope Street on trauma-informed care (including restorative practices) in the classroom. The goal is to build relationships and meet the complex needs of the students, especially those who have experienced trauma.
This project will provide the materials my students need to use in our “Calm Corner” to help them self-regulate in order to recharge and refocus on academic learning.
The "Calm Corner" will include such items as bean bag chairs, noise-cancelling headphones, fidgets, weighted blankets, stuffed animals, wiggle seats, timers, and gum/mints/candy. It will also include an organizer for snacks and water. Band-Aids will be available in the "Calm Corner" and will be used during nurture groups with the students.
With these tools, I can create a positive classroom environment where all students can learn.
