Students will be able to use VR goggles to relate elevation levels in a real-world context. The VR goggles will allow students to take a virtual field trip to two places with very different elevation levels. By using the virtual goggles students will be able to reach the goal of being able to plot negative and positive numbers on a number line. Students will also have a better understanding of absolute value and how it is described as the distance from zero. Virtual field trips will help students relate content to math and to other subject areas as well. With Covid restrictions, students are not able to travel as much with school and with their own families. Virtual field trips give students the opportunity to explore new places safely and many places they might never get to explore in person. Virtual reality and virtual field trips are more stimulating to the brain and students will be able to explore more on their own, which promotes student-centered learning.
The VR goggles can be used for many years to come. More virtual field trips are being produced because they are currently an emerging technology in education. Students will be able to use the virtual reality goggles for many more topics and subject areas. For example, during a ratio unit, the students could visit the Burj Khalifa to view the building and estimate how long it would take to clean all the windows at a certain rate. Students could also use a virtual field trips for a geometry unit and calculate the total area of the great pyramids through a different virtual field trip. The VR googles give students many more opportunities to relate math in a real-world context.
