As a first grade teacher, one of the most important jobs I have with my students is to support them in growing their reading skills and help them develop a true love of reading. The students I will be working with and the community I will be serving alongside of are rich with cultures other than my own. With these carefully selected books, I will be able to cultivate a classroom library that is culturally diverse and inclusive with an emphasis on the importance of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).
These books will give my students opportunities to see themselves represented through art and words, and open us all up to a world of cultures and traditions that we can explore together. With these books, I hope to encourage my students to be curious and open-minded when introduced to something unfamiliar, and proud spokespeople for what they know and who they are.
It's my dream for each student to develop a love of reading, and I believe that can be done by giving them access to engaging books that they can connect to and learn from. By providing my students with access to a wide-range of stories and experiences they will be able to see themselves represented, learn about the special identities that make us all unique, and recognize the powerful ties that connect us all together.
