I teach at a high school downtown in an urban school district in California. My students are mostly Latino, with some Asian and African American students as well. Some come from immigrant families and navigate two cultures and two languages. Most come from low-income backgrounds, and may be the first in their families to graduate from high school or go to college.
The high school where I teach is based on a small school model. Students and teachers build and maintain a community there. Part of that community includes a leadership development program. Students are encouraged to empower themselves to make change through their involvement in extracurricular activities, tutoring, and volunteer work.
I am working with the leadership coordinator to offer a yoga class and bring in yoga teachers from a local studio so that students and their parents can take part in the physical, mental, and philosophical benefits of yoga.
