The students I serve struggle with reading and are several grade levels behind in reading skills. Reading has always been something they "have" to do as part of school. I want to help them learn that reading can also be for pleasure. I will be having 15 minutes of silent reading in my class at the begging of the class, everyday where students can explore books for fun. By having a reading area with alternative seating, I am creating a fun place for the students to go to read. They get to move around and leave their desks, thus changing their atmosphere.
Students will have the opportunity to read for enjoyment away from their desks where all the learning (work)happens so they won't associate pleasure reading with work. This will hopefully enourage them to do it outside the classroom as well.
