I am requesting a lava lamp, a meditation area rug and a variety of rich, STEM-centric young adult novels written by and centered around characters who look like my students for science book club discussions throughout the year. Students have a hard time seeing themselves in STEM fields, especially students of color. This project will open up their worlds to a variety of young adult novels that have characters that are like them in different STEM areas in a storyline that is interesting and engaging for middle grade students. We will be participating in "Science Book Clubs" throughout the year where students will have the opportunity to choose from a selection of books, read and discuss with other students in the class who chose the same book. We will do multiple rounds of book clubs throughout the year so that students have opportunities to experience multiple reading experiences.
