No matter how many times they may say it, I don't believe any student hates reading or is a "bad reader." Rather, I believe they just haven't read the right text yet. In our novel study of Holes by Louis Sachar, I hope to give each student the opportunity to read a book from start to finish, building their comprehension skills and hopefully also igniting a spark that changes their perspective on reading for life.
With students in my classroom being at a great variety of reading levels, providing each student with a copy of the novel and their own notebook will allow them to read and work at their own pace. Having their own copy also means that they are able to bring the book home to continue their work and feel a greater sense of accomplishment turning every page.
