In this project, middle school students in the World Beat Club (multicultural club) will learn to dance, play percussion and sing Afro-Puerto Rican "Plena" music, which will culminate in a performance for multi-cultural night. A professional "plena" musician, singer, and historian of this genre will give eight lessons in which students will learn the significance of the genre, a call and response song, percussion on hand drums, and a choreographed dance. It will serve as a catalyst to show similarities between all black music in the U.S. and the Caribbean.
