Living in the poorest county in our state we have limited resources for our school library. I am in the process of trying to create a safe and relaxed environment for these less fortunate students.
Most days these kids don’t know what they are going home to. The living situations can change from the time they arrive at school. They may have no electricity or no one at home that can read with them or to them. Their relatives may have limited reading abilities and these kids seem to follow in their footsteps.
By creating a serene atmosphere I am hoping to encourage them to read. If they can relax, and hopefully find a topic that interests them, I think they would enjoy reading and hopefully raise reading scores.
