My goal for my special education classroom is to meet my students' physical and sensory needs whether they are learning to read or need a quiet, safe place to calm down when they are upset. Flexible seating allows students to move while they are working without being off task and gives them control and choice. Many items I have requested will be used for my kindergarten through third grade students who have a hard time managing big feelings in their classrooms. I want my classroom to be a safe space for them to come and use the rocking chair, weighted blanket, or sensory balls to regulate their emotions, learn coping skills, and be able to return to the classroom after they are calm.
My students experience more success and growth in their classrooms and in special education when they are given the opportunity to address their sensory and physical needs.
