Sitting still at a desk while analyzing texts (even the most interesting and engaging of texts) or writing essays (even with the most interesting and engaging topics) can be a struggle for anyone, especially 11-12-year-olds. When sitting becomes a stumbling block to their learning and engagement, a variety of seating options will provide my English Language Arts and Literacy students a much-needed alternative to a regular desk or chair.
These various seating additions and enhancements will allow my students the opportunity to engage and learn from a "seat" where they are physically AND mentally present.
Additionally, it will allow them the opportunity to advocate for their need to sit or stand in a seat or desk more conducive to their learning. Currently, our classroom only has standard desks and chairs, so my students will benefit from a variety of seating options and enhancements to meet their unique physical learning needs. Having the option to stand, wiggle, wobble, and surf while engaging in reading and writing (that typically "requires" sitting still) will allow them to more effectively engage with the texts their reading and writing.
