Children learn through play. They also work through their emotional angst and learn new social skills as they interact with peers or a Counselor. My office is set up with a small kitchen, Legos, sand, games, and writing supplies. However, my predominantly African-American children play with an old white doll, caucasian Barbies, and white puppets. When I go into their classes to teach social skills and safety lessons, the books reflect Caucasian characters who are the heroes and examples of bravery and character.
My handsome students need to see their ebony skin reflected in their toys and books. They need to know that they come from a phenomenal heritage and are part of a culture that displays amazing feats of daring-do; builds or devises brilliant inventions; entertains with unique composition and style; and demonstrates a legacy of courage and resilience. They need to be proud of who they are and see themselves in their everyday play!
