My students are reluctant readers. However, with modern and high interest books, I have seen them read without putting the book down and frequently asking to check out the book. They can relate to these modern books and stories because they are written for these young adolescent pupils.
Many of my students are from lower socioeconomic background and cannot afford books. Several of my students have not even been to a book store - or library.
