My goal as a 6th grade ELA special education teacher is to create a classroom climate that values--and teaches--respect, understanding, and student achievement in a non-competitive but exciting environment.
With these books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of text where they will find titles that they can read and connect with while affirming their own identities as well as developing important positive insight about others.
Students will use these books as mirrors, which will allow them to see themselves represented stories and explore their identity. Students will use these books as windows, which brings visibility to cultures different from their own.
