Earlier this month, I asked my freshmen GATE students to work in groups of 3-4 to propose a new room layout with upgrades of their choice. Students had to meet a list of requirements (number of desks, space to store books, etc.) and keep within a budget of $500-$800. Students then presented their proposals to the class. As a whole group, they decided on their top choices.
I was blown away by the creativity, empathy, and teamwork my students demonstrated working on this project. After a year in quarantine, it is clear that my students deeply want to feel part of a community.
Three main categories emerged: a safe cool down space to take a breather, support for physical needs such as food and toiletries, and enrichment activities to bond with others. The items listed are a combination of their requests and a few activities I know to benefit students.
Upon successful funding, my GATE students will unpack, assemble, and arrange our new room. They will be responsible for storing and checking on our supplies, as well as creating procedures for other classes to use our new space. While my GATE students will helm this project, the space and activities will benefit all 140 of my students, especially my freshmen English classes.
Thank you for helping my students create their own safe and empowering learning environment.
