Kids love technology and learn it easily and almost always achieve in it! We don't ever have funding for fancy technology equipment, nor do we have a ton of time in the day to teach technology-specific content; however, I do integrate it into all content areas. My students always learn Adobe and Google applications as well as fun design applications such as Canva, Glogster and other web-based design programs. We also teach coding. Whatever we do with technology, kids take off fast and are super engaged.
I want drawing tablets for every student to use throughout the day in multiple content areas! This school year I started having the students complete some of their math assignments on the computer because I saw another teacher using Google Draw for the kids to show their work, insert number lines or other math elements, etc. I've always cringed at doing math on the computer because, at a certain point, you have to have pencil and paper. The kids enjoyed doing it with Google Draw though because they like technology, but it is hard to do it super well or efficiently using a Chromebook mouse as your drawing tool. I told them how cool it'd be if we could get drawing tablets to do our math with and they practically went into beg mode.
When Donors Choose came about I decided to give it a try and it got me thinking about everything else I could use them for. I think the kids could ultimately create some really cool projects in almost every area of content. I do believe anything that implements technology will give kids a cutting edge in today's world, but I also believe it has to be engaging, useful, and functional. This would be so useful and fun in 6th grade!
