Something I notice that is desperately missed in our youth's education is choice reading.
We might rightfully assume that the majority of our students are not occupying their free time reading books these days. My thought is that we can promote life-long reading and learning by including independent, student-choice reading in our daily classroom rituals.
The majority of reading that takes place in school is hyper-structured, breaking down elements of narrative or sentence structure, voice, grammar, mechanics, etc. I think that sometimes our students just need to read for the joy of reading. My hope is to give students access to a wide-range, continually evolving, and diverse bookshelf where they can become readers.
