Calculators can scale down the complexity of solving problems. Currently, our class only has 10 course supported calculators to for an average class size of 34. Some students cannot afford the Scientific Calculators or currently have a calculator that can only complete simple calculations. By supplying students these calculators in the classroom, they can successfully immerse themselves in the material. This will create an atmosphere where there is equity to complete the problems.
Calculators may seem small, but they can make a big difference in mathematic development.
These tools will support students in gaining a skill that can be applied to higher level math classes and opportunities after high school. Even with the limited calculators currently in class, the students have shown great interest in understanding concepts and developing applicable skills. For this reason, I can only imagine what a Scientific Calculator could do in each student's hand.
