I am a firm believer that literacy opens minds and creates opportunity. Most of the students in my classroom come from homes without books. As a remedy to this unfortunate situation, I am attempting to create a large classroom library filled with a diverse range of titles in hopes that each student in my room will find a book with which he or she connects. I want to help my students find their place in the world and by providing them with literature that resembles their experiences or lifestyle I will be doing just that. Furthermore, books with a sturdy bookstand allow opportunities to view cultures and ideas other than our own which helps to build open-minded, culturally responsive students. My goal is to build a classroom library that is so extensive all students will be able to see themselves in at least one title.
