Our reading program relies on students finding books that they love in order to learn to read. It promotes independent reading and self-monitoring. We want to instill the love of reading in our students, and to do that, we need current titles that the students are interested in. With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level. Students are constantly asking for the latest books and mangas that are popular because they cannot afford to buy them themselves.
In order to promote independent reading, we want the students to be able to take books home that they love in order to instill in them a passion for reading. By allowing students to read what they are interested in, they are more motivated to put in the hard work and effort required to get passed their disabilities and learn to read. Students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of what to read.
The students will use these books to apply the skills they are being taught in class and will write summaries, discuss genres, create sequence of event charts, analyze characterization, and much more.
