Many of my students have autism, ADHD, and sensory needs. These differences can make it difficult for them to engage in reading and learning. As middle schoolers who are struggling readers, they often feel discouraged by the gap that exists between themselves and their peers. As I work to provide interventions that will help bridge this gap, I want to build a comfortable reading environment where my students begin to view reading as a positive, enjoyable experience. By meeting my students’ sensory needs, I hope to support their attention and enable them to succeed as capable, independent learners.
