I teach Guided Reading in small groups, with four to five students in each group. My students love to read and are always eager to read aloud. Students at this age are not ready to read silently. Whisper reading helps students sound out words and helps them understand what they are reading. They are given the chance to read aloud, without some of the drawbacks. I am able to hear how well students read and how I can correct their mistakes.
The use of "Whisper Phones" makes the student who never wanted to read out loud feel more comfortable. This device allows students to hear themselves, without having to worry others can hear. When using the "Whisper Phone", kids hold one end of the phone up to their ear and whisper read into the other end. The phone amplifies the sound, which helps kids more clearly hear the sounds and words they’re saying. It can help students with their phonological awareness and become fluent readers. "Whisper Phones" would greatly benefit my students and their success in becoming fluent readers.
