We are a Title I school with many English Language Learners, so my students are lucky enough to each be given a laptop for use at school. Unfortunately, they do not bring headphones to school and have to use very low quality earbuds that don't fit their little ears. The earbuds fall out of their ears, break and tangle easily, which is frustrating to first graders.
Their learning grows as they participate in an engaging, differentiated reading program for 10-15 minutes a day. They also enjoy listening to screen recordings that I have made for them that give them extra practice in many different reading skills. Without good quality headphones, they won't benefit from any differentiated practice on their laptops because they cannot hear or waste time trying to untangle their earbuds.
