I wanted a more diverse cultural representation in the fantasy genre to give students a variety of background options. Our first unit focuses on identity and how authors are impacted by myths and stories that they have learned. I felt it was important that students have options in fantasy that are related to different cultural backgrounds or re-tellings. It is my larger goal to build a more culturally inclusive classroom library so students will have access to the books beyond the first unit. I want students to be able to share books that they accessed within the library with their peers so that the reading expands beyond a single student reading a single book. This allows them to build connections with each other through sharing their reading experiences.
