I have recently been doing personal professional development on the increased awareness and need for social emotional learning as well as multiple strategies and interventions to create a therapeutic learning environment.
Sand trays are used as a hands on tool that students can show their feelings. By manipulating sand with miniature toy like pieces to describe and/or create without the use of words can be an effective option. Reflective and thoughtful consideration of examples may look similar to this...
Students set up their sand tray and select minis from an array of choices that are small objects. Their first task of the day is read from the board. A question is posted: "Show how you feel when you spend time with someone who inspires you?" "Show a time you accomplished a task!" These questions would allow for quiet time, optional sharing, and processing. Questions would range for the well being of individuals and/or group. Promoting a positive start to each day and allow all children to feel valued and noticed.
