These items will be used to help students learn how to spend passive time in positive ways. Puzzles can be used to work together on a common goal as a team or over time with several classes contributing to completion. Games like chess teach patience and strategy. The creative items will be used for students to creatively retell stories that we have read together. Different types of blocks can be used to build a home a wolf cannot blow down, for example, as a response to reading different versions of the 3 Little Pigs. The pipe cleaners can be used to build characters from a story to create a drama retelling a story or alternative endings. All students have a different perspective of our readings and should have different ways to express themselves outside of just paper and pencil responses.
I plan to use these materials to create a school library that will be divided into different centers so all students will have time to try the different activities after checking out their books or waiting their turn to check out books.
I believe knowing how to spend time in positive ways passively is a life skill that can benefit students that come from busy and loud homes.
