This school year, I am extremely excited to be using the Orton-Gillingham teaching structure to assist my students in their literacy development. As part of this multi-sensory educational experience, students use a range of manipulatives and means of teaching to grasp concepts like "magic e" and vowel rules. Many of the materials I am requesting are required components of the curriculum. For example, sand and the sand trays will be used to practice tracing the letters/sounds students hear, and the traditional office supplies will be used to help students clearly organize their work and materials.
With the proper supports and materials, all students have the potential to meet the learning outcomes of each Orton-Gillingham lesson. As a result of this project, students will be able to truly experience all aspects of the literacy program, which is specifically designed to reach those struggling with various aspects of literacy acquisition. My students have shown me in years past that they have a desire and passion to succeed, and this project will help give them the means to do so.
